Trend Report – Pumpkin
One of the only things that keeps us going as summer comes to an end is that Pumpkin Spice season is upon us. The Pumpkin Spice Latte took over the whole season now expanding beyond going to your local Starbucks. Each season is exciting to see what companies partake in the trend, a now seasonal staple. In the private label world Trader Joe’s dominates the market – a must go destination for Pumpkin lovers. However, here we are focusing on CPG brands that have added an extra sku to their product line to take part in the festivities. There is so much innovation of what now can be “Pumpkin Spice” or “Pumpkin” flavored.
Though we are lovers of food, for us as a designers what is insightful for us is to see what extra design elements they are putting on pack to make their packaging unique and special. The more obvious pieces of design include adding orange as well as an illustration of a pumpkin or fall leaf. Additional elements include some kind of verbiage saying “Limited Edition”, “Limited Batch” and “Seasonal” – making customers aware this product is just here for the season. Skinny Dip Chocolate Covered Almonds uses “Small Batch,” which feels more artisan. Overall, while still having fun, most of the designs use more traditional methods of visually showing the flavor to be more recognizable for consumer.
